What’s Wrong With Windows Phone In India?
Nokia sold 7.4 million Lumia devices in the second quarter of 2013. There are no official numbers on how many Lumia devices exactly were sold in India. If you take a look at the recently launched Amazon India’s mobile store it seems like Lumia 510 is a clear winner. Probably because it is the cheapest Windows Phone available in the country.
Not the Lumia 520 which is the cheapest Windows Phone 8 device available in the market today. So are people really buying the cheapest device and overlooking whether it is running an outdate mobile operating system? I guess so. I suppose when you’re going for the cheapest device in the market, you really want the one with a lower price tag, even if it means going for an older version of Windows Phone.
This is a problem for both Microsoft and Nokia who’re otherwise pushing Windows Phone 8 all across the country. WP 8 devices are available at almost all price points – Lumia 520 for an under Rs. 10,000 price, Lumia 620 for a less than Rs. 15,000 price point and Lumia 820 and 720 for a mid-range device while the flagship Lumia 920 is currently being sold for around Rs. 32,000 everywhere.
Meanwhile on Flipkart, another popular online retailer, the story is different. A lot more people are buying Lumia 520 and Lumia 720 than the Lumia 510. But assuming Flipkart probably sells more devices in a day as compared to Amazon, sales for Lumia 510 would still be quite significant.
What Nokia could ideally be doing here is taking those devices off the market and pushing Lumia 520 to this audience, even if it means bringing the price further down. Someone who might get the Lumia 520 as their first smartphone are more likely to opt for a flagship Lumia device later in the future, given that their experience with the device is decent enough. I’m afraid I can’t say that for those using Lumia 510.
