Too Soon for the iPad 2? Or Brave the Lines at the Apple Store to Buy One?

As an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) serving the Los Angeles area, our customers often ask us whether they should upgrade to the latest Mac computers or hold on to their existing ones. Because we focus on repairing and supporting Mac products, rather than selling new computers, customers want to hear our "unbiased" opinions on the latest devices before heading to the nearest Apple store to make new purchases. If you are up-to-date on the latest news about Apple computers, you may have seen the preliminary "reviews" for the iPad 2, a new iPad that is expected to launch in March or April 2011. It's always interesting to see how much publicity a new Mac product produces - even before it hits the Apple Store - but with popular products such as the iPad 2, it is not surprising. Here's the burning question - Is it now time to upgrade to the iPad 2, or wait until the 3rd generation comes out next year? Before you stand in line at the local Apple St

Why the Apple Store Doesn't Want You to Bring In Your Broken Mac

A common question from Apple MacBook owners regarding Mac repair services is: Who should I take my MacBook to if it needs an upgrade or repair? The reason for the apparent dilemma is that the answers might include: an Apple Reseller, Apple Retailer, Apple Dealer, the local Apple Store , or an Authorized Apple Repair Center? So what's the difference? Your average Apple Store , Apple Retailer, or Apple Dealer are all essentially the same thing. Each may have varying levels of expertise on Apple computers and products, depending on their setup and the product ranges they focus on. The majority of Authorized Apple Dealers (however they label themselves) are retailers that are focused on selling new products. Although they may well be helpful in a numerous ways and are able to perform certified MacBook repairs, they usually only want to provide limited repairs and upgrades. Understandably, an Apple Dealer might be a little anxious to have clients bringing in MacBook repairs, with f

Apple to debut two curved-display iPhones next year Will Conley , Apple is reportedly developing two curved-display iPhones to be released in the second half of next year, anonymous inside sources have revealed. The displays will likely curve downwards towards the side edges of the devices, as in the mockup shown in the image below. The phones will also likely include touch-sensitivity that can respond to differing levels of pressure. The phones will come in two sizes: one with a 4.7-inch screen, the other with a 5.5-inch one. The latter would edge up on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 flat phablet in terms of size. Both phones would be Apple’s largest handsets to date. The curved-display iPhones will compete with the  Samsung Galaxy Round  and the  LG G Flex , which were both released within the last few weeks. Those models’ displays edge toward the concave, rather than convex as the iPhones will likely favor. The market has yet to decide how it wants its displays

Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook unveils the iPhone 5C at the company's event in California on September 10. Photograph: STEPHEN LAM/REUTERS Apple may be developing two larger-sized iPhones replete with curved glass screens and sensors that can detect different levels of pressure, according to a report by  Bloomberg News . A source claimed that the phones under development have screens that are 4.7in and 5.5in diagonal, both larger than the 4in screen of the iPhone 5S, currently the largest in any Apple phone. Industry analysts have been expecting a larger phone from Apple due to the success of 5in and larger Android phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Sony Xperia Z. But the idea that the two models would feature "larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges", as reported by Bloomberg, has not previously been suggested. The Samsung Galaxy Round, a 5.7in phone with a curved glass display, demonstrates that the technology is ready, though the ph

You Can't Buy Samsung Cell Phone Covers At The Apple Store

You could be forgiven for assuming that the best place to buy iPod and iPhone accessories is the Apple Store . After all, Apple spends an incredible amount of money on marketing to make sure that you buy everything through their retail outlets. The Apple Store has not one, but two Achilles heels, though. First of all, they don't carry accessories for other manufacturer's products, it's strictly a one trick pony; so if you're looking for a new case for your iPod along with LG cell phone covers, you're going to have to look somewhere else. A spare recharger for your Blackberry? Not very likely, Don't even think about shopping for Samsung cell phone covers in one of those fancy glass retail outlets or the web store. Apple's other weakness is pricing. Because its customers are essentially captive (or at least many of them behave as though they are), the Apple Store seldom offers sale pricing. We recently compared the offerings and prices for a range of Apple

What’s Wrong With Windows Phone In India?

Image
Nokia sold 7.4 million Lumia devices in the second quarter of 2013. There are no official numbers on how many Lumia devices exactly were sold in India. If you take a look at the recently launched Amazon India’s mobile store it seems like Lumia 510 is a clear winner. Probably because it is the cheapest Windows Phone available in the country. Not the Lumia 520 which is the cheapest Windows Phone 8 device available in the market today. So are people really buying the cheapest device and overlooking whether it is running an outdate mobile operating system? I guess so. I suppose when you’re going for the cheapest device in the market, you really want the one with a lower price tag, even if it means going for an older version of Windows Phone. This is a problem for both Microsoft and Nokia who’re otherwise pushing Windows Phone 8 all across the country. WP 8 devices are available at almost all price points – Lumia 520 for an under Rs. 10,000 price, Lumia 620 for a less than Rs. 15,000

Apple Store app gets updated, Passbook gift cards break U.S. exclusivity

Image
A year ago almost to the day, the Apple Store app for iPhone added support for Passbook integrated Apple Store gift cards that you could buy and send via email. Apple has now pushed an update to the app that adds the feature for some new countries, including the UK, Canada and Australia. Perfect for that long distance holiday gift. Buying a gift card in the app is pretty straight forward. You choose the color or design you want the person at the other end to see, enter the amount you want to give, add the relevant email addresses and messages and you’re all set. They’re not the easiest things to find though, so the best thing to do is a simple search for “gift cards” and it’ll bring them up for you. There’s also “various improvements and performance enhancements,” which is nice, but it’s all about the gift cards. Grab the update from the App Store link below, and if you spot this in a country we didn’t mention, shout out in the comments below and tell us where you are!
